11 Quick Hangover Cures

pickle-juice-hangover-cure-2Here are some quick hangover cures to try. Give them a shot and let us know if you’re still hungover!

  1. When curing a hangover one must always remember that it takes time.  The amount of time required is determined by the notion “as long as it takes to feel better.” Sleep and rest are your best friends at this point, and are necessary for your physical recovery.
  2. Replenish your body with fruit juice and water for nutrients.
  3. Generally avoid mass quantities of caffeine, however a weak cup of coffee may be okay but a lot of caffeine will continue to dehydrate you, which is the opposite of what you want right now.
  4. Drink orange juice for Vitamin C, and sports drinks like Gatorade or PowerAde.
  5. Eat mineral rich food like pickles or canned fish. In Poland drinking pickle juice is a common remedy.
  6. Once in a while you can drink a Bloody Mary the old “Hair of the dog that bit you.” This is actually only a temporary cure.
  7. Take a shower, switching between cold and hot water.
  8. In Ireland it was said that the cure for a hangover is to bury the ailing person up to the neck in moist river sand.
  9. Try Alka Seltzer Morning Relief, Chaser Tablets and there is a new one out called The Hangover Cure.
    Get some exercise, go for a run or surf, play some soccer, whatever you can get the courage to do in your hungover state.
  10. The side effects of aspirin, Tylenol and ibuprofen can be magnified when alcohol is in your system, so it is best (even though it may be the first thing you reach for) to avoid them to kill the hangover pain. Aspirin is a blood thinner, just like alcohol, and can intensify its effects and Tylenol (or acetaminophen) can cause more damage to your liver. Ibuprofen can also cause stomach bleeding. So be cautious when going for the quick relief.
  11. B vitamin and drinking a lot of water before going to sleep helps too.

Finally, these are all remedies, the best way is to find what works for you and master the art of just those few! Also, you can always try not drinking as much!

    For a hardcore night I have found the following formula will get me going Sunday. Needless to say its a no holding back formula but this touches on all the treatable high notes. Be sure to ask your doctor first and he or she will tell you to drink less and watch out for your liver but this works.

    Before bed
    1. Water until you overflow. Really fill up. Mixing in a Switchel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switchel) or other sodium free energy drink is best but if you are really hammered go for the water with singleminded focus
    2. Antioxidants (I take vitamin C, E, multivitamin and CoQ)
    3. Prilosec (or similar) and a couple tums
    4. Anti inflammatory. I use ibuprofen

    In the morning
    1. More fluids – literally every 15 min its time to hit another glass of water until your out of the hell that is hangover.
    2. Another tums
    3. A stimulant (caffeine is my choice). The catch is you have to drown the caffeine with item 1 but the body needs the boost.
    4. Painkillers and anti inflammatory. ibuprofen again then mix in the acetaminophen when the alcohol is out of the bloodstream (-1 drink per hour). Increase the dosage proportionally if you are over 120lbs. I actually take a half dose of each every two hours after the initial morning dose. Vicodin works great (better) obviously but that takes an Rx and more coffee.
    5. Eggs toast and meat
    6. Antioxidants with every meal all day long.
