With bacon mania at an all time high, it was only a matter of time before we at HangoverSchool had to investigate its potential as a hangover cure. According to this article published in The Telegraph, researchers at Newcastle University’s Center of Life have discovered that the consumption of bacon can replenish amino acids that are essential to the body’s functioning.
Drinking heavily depletes the neurotransmitters in the body, which leads to headaches, sluggishness, and the overall negative morning-after effects we refer to as a hangover. Bacon, being a protein, breaks down into amino acids when digested. Elin Roberts, of Newcastle University’s Center of Life, states that, “Bingeing on alcohol depletes neurotransmitters too, but bacon contains a high level of aminos which tops these up, giving you a clearer head.”
Of course, bacon isn’t the only fatty, protein rich food we could eat the morning after, any meat product will be broken down into these aminos, but what better way to start the day than a healthy helping of bacon? It certainly helps the process that our bodies naturally tend to crave fatty foods when we’re hung over. David Levitsky, professor of human ecology and nutritional sciences at Cornell University, says, “All mammals gravitate to eating the most energy-dense foods. Fat is the most energy-dense food available.”
In this article published by Popular Science, they go on to explain that brain chemistry may play an important part in this craving. William Gruchow, a professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, believes that our desire for fatty bacon and other such foods are caused by an increase in the brain chemical galanin. “Galanin increases appetite for fats, and consumption of fat causes more galanin to be produced,” Gruchow said. “Alcohol intake also results in increased galanin production.”
So, drinking alcohol increases galanin production, which leads to man’s natural craving for fatty foods. And bacon, being a member of the most energy-dense foods available, breaks down into essential amino acids that help with neurotransmitter production. Better news hasn’t been heard: Get drunk -> Eat bacon!
